Recovery of Pure ZnO Nanoparticles from Spent Alkaline Batteries
“Generally used alkaline batteries contain heavy metals such as zinc, manganese, mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel, which can contaminate the environment and pose a potential threat to human health when batteries are improperly disposed of.
Unplanned disposal of spent batteries not only pose an environmental problem, it is a complete waste of a potential and cheap raw material.

Dr Akash Deep, a scientist in CSIR-CSIO Chandigarh, and his team carried out research to address the recycling of consumer-type batteries. The findings are reported in a recent issue of Environmental Science & Technology ("Recovery of Pure ZnO Nanoparticles from Spent Zn-MnO2 Alkaline Batteries").
The recovery of pure zinc oxide nanoparticles from the spent Zn-Mn dry alkaline batteries is achieved through systematic processing involving leaching, solvent extraction and thermal combustion. The practical significance of the work has been globally recognized and several online nanotechnology portals have covered the research news for better knowledge dissemination.”…PubMed.gov
